Originally called “Press Week” in 1943, Fashion Week is an industry event that showcases the latest offerings from established and emerging fashion designers and houses. The popular event also welcomes a star-studded crowd of celebrities and street style stars for a series of runway shows and presentations.
Starting in New York and ending with Paris, Fashion Month is a biennial event that takes place in February and September in the world’s most prominent fashion capitals: New York, London, Milan and Paris. Other global fashion weeks are held in Copenhagen, Johannesburg, Seoul and Shanghai, among many others. Although some designers don’t adhere to traditional calendar dates, those who do unveil their collections for the seasons ahead, which means you’ll note fall trends in spring and spring trends in fall. Some festivals start before the official date.
While some household names such as Michael Kors and Tory Burch and major fashion houses such as Saint Laurent, Dior and Gucci regularly participate in fashion weeks, others including Christopher John Rogers and Peter Doe sometimes skip a season to release their own scheduled collections. This shift towards more seasonless fashion has become more popular since the pandemic. Apart from these womenswear shows, there are menswear, resort and haute couture shows that take place at different times of the year.
