If the crisp button-downs and floppy hats we’ve seen all summer are any indication, the coastal-grandma aesthetic has power. Originally coined by TikTok creator Lex Nicoletta in the spring, the phrase has evolved into a full-fledged fashion and lifestyle trend. In an Aug. 3 sketch on “The Tonight Show,” Jimmy Fallon released a music video dedicated to the aspirational lifestyle, tapping resident coastal grandma Jane Fonda for a guest appearance.
As Fallon sings hilarious songs that speak to all the markers of a coastal grandma — including breezy linen pants, gardening and sensible shoes — Fonda embodies the aesthetic and the activities that come with it. With a sweater tied loosely around her shoulders and a gold shell necklace between her chest, the “Grace and Frankie” star hummed to the nostalgic melody as she arranged shells in a jar, looked through her closet full of 18 shades of beige and navy, and held a Sitting in a wicker chair with a martini.
The word went viral earlier this year when Nicoletta called it “Nancy Meyers movies, coastal vibes, recipes and cooking, Ina Garten, [and] Interior.” For clothing, that translates to lightweight dresses, classic button-downs, functional sandals, and linens in a neutral, beachy color palette. And as Nicoletta says, “You don’t have to be a grandma to be a coastal grandma.” Above, Fallon and Fonder. Check out the hilarious interpretation of the effortless aesthetic.
