Despite the warm outdoor temperatures, I’ve recently been preparing my closet for the transition into fall (wishful thinking, I know!) It’s a tradition I follow every year — moving my summer-specific clothes into storage bins and drawers, along with everything else I own. , swapping in forgotten styles for fall. While most of the pieces in my fall collection are styles that I’ve been able to re-wear and reimagine over the years, every once in a while a new item will make its way into my fall wardrobe. As has already been the case this season, the latest addition to my closet is the Old Navy High-Waisted Black Wash Jean Skirt ($30, originally $40).
Like many other ’90s fashion trends, the midi skirt has re-emerged this season in all its long, country-chic glory. Kendall Jenner made several denim iterations of the style throughout the summer, along with other stars like Bella Hadid and Katie Holmes. And while the jean midi-skirt is a versatile staple any season, the style is especially perfect for fall — chunky sweaters, knee-high boots, and other fall pieces double as the style’s seamless fashion companion.
Naturally, when I saw the charcoal-washed, jean midi-skirt in Old Navy’s new arrivals section, I knew it was worth adding to my digital shopping cart. Read on for my honest thoughts on the style.
What I love about this old navy jean midi-skirt
First and foremost: this midi-skirt is so chic. I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve had my reservations about long skirts in the past — even going so far as to avoid them altogether because I wasn’t sure they worked with my personal style or frame. But this Old Navy jean skirt proved to be a pleasant and welcome surprise.
The black wash color of the style alone was a huge selling point for me. While I love a classic pair of light-wash or baby blue denim, I also know that the look often boasts a much more casual and relaxed daytime appeal, rather than something you’d want to dress up or wear for a chic, evening outfit. But the charcoal-hued color of this skirt gives the outfit versatility. Not only can I dress it up with a wide range of colors, but I can easily style it into a day-to-night outfit with a chic blouse, gold-toned belt, and the right pair of stilettos. The moody color honestly makes me forget I’m wearing a jean skirt at all — especially in photos.
Another thing I love about the product is its high-waisted design. I have somewhat of an hourglass frame, which means that while the bottom may be more snug around my hips, the fit is often too loose around my waist — creating a distorted, baggy and often confusing design. But thanks to the high-waisted design of this skirt, the style has a more universally flattering fit – providing a curve-hugging silhouette that accentuates my figure. except Makes me feel very constricted or uncomfortable.
What is worth noting
The skirt is made from a non-stretch jean material that also features a “Never-Quit Shape Retention” technology. When style by doing Nicely fitting, I’ll also admit that the skirt required a bit more movement for me to get into — and that’s when I’m wearing my usual size six. Other reviewers also noted that the fit of the skirt is on the snugger side.
In all honesty, I don’t mind the initial effort required to fit the skirt. The appeal of this style (in my opinion) is that its high-waisted design helps create a more form-fitting look that’s easy to pair with more clothing items and avoids completely drowning out my figure. While I would definitely recommend this midi-skirt, the snugger fit is definitely worth embracing if you’re hoping for more breathability after the initial wear.
Who is this old navy jean midi-skirt best for?
I’m a denim pant-lover, but even I struggle with wearing them in the transitional seasons. What I love about this jean midi-skirt in particular is that I can enjoy the same styling aesthetic of a classic pair of denim, without the hassle of wearing otherwise thick or warm pants – especially through the frigid temperatures of August. During the day it’s easy to pair the style with a cropped, white tee and my Air Force 1s. Whereas in the evening or even if I’m going to a work event, I can easily enhance the skirt with a bodysuit, cropped blouse or even an oversized sweater and heels for a more edgy (and elegant!) look.
This jean midi-skirt is for anyone looking to invest in a fashion staple that’s as versatile as it is comfortable — and easy to wear in any season. Plus, for a quality denim style, you really can’t beat the price point under $50.
