Devi Vishwakumar’s colorful print-mixing has become a trend among stylish fans of Netflix’s “Never Have I Ever.” Costume designer Salvador Perez told POPSUGAR that she calls her look “unun fashionable,” meaning she owns her sense of style without being luxury-obsessed.
“While we kept her printed pants and oversized cardigans, we made her a little more fun and flirty.”
Devi, starring Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, is known for her 90s inspired style. She wears everything from multicolored Free People cardigans to plaid Urban Outfitters pants with combat boots. Perez says it’s an aesthetic based on the sense of style show creator Mindy Kaling picked up during her teenage years in Sherman Oaks, CA.
But when a third season was announced, Perez was busy designing for “Hocus Pocus 2” and handed the reins to his former assistant Glinda Suarez, who was also Kaling’s personal shopper for “The Mindy Project.” Suarez, who has worked with the “NHIE” costume team since the first season, made a smooth transition by adopting Perez’s approach and further enhancing the series’ costumes.
“Salvador is a tough act to follow, so of course it took some nerves for the third season, but he set me up for success,” she tells PopSugar via email.
“The goddess lit up a little bit,” Suarez says of the hero’s newfound confidence in season three. “She’s a junior now and finally has the boyfriend she’s been dreaming of since freshman year. While we kept her printed pants and oversized cardigans, we made her a little more fun and flirty, kicking off the season with a body-con dress. ‘Daxton.’ Debut. We also added some lower necklines, like the sunflower blouse she wears to the party where she meets a certain Indian heartthrob.”
