The highly acclaimed HBO series has taken the Internet by storm since the announcement of “Game of Thrones” prequel “House of the Dragon,” bringing in nearly 20 million viewers after the first installment aired on Aug. 21. If the plot isn’t impressive enough, the popular show takes fashion enthusiasts on a nostalgic journey with its distinctive wardrobe, where each house has its own unique style similar to “Game of Thrones”.

While “House of the Dragon” has undeniable ties to its predecessor, the new series has developed its own visual identity that leaves viewers on the edge of their seats, and fans have award-winning French costume designer Janney Temim to thank for that. With an impressive career from being the fashion editor at Elle magazine to working on the costumes for the iconic Harry Potter film series, it’s no surprise that Tammym Targaryen has enhanced the costumes worn by the main players of the family: King Viserys I (Paddy Considine), Prince Daemon (Matt Smith ), Princess Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy and Millie Alcock), Princess Rhaenys (Eve Best), Alicent Hightower (Emily Carey), as well as Sir Kristen Cole (Fabian Frankel) with the Cole family.

“To be honest, I’ve never seen ‘Game of Thrones,'” Temim told Tatler magazine. “I got the offer during quarantine, and I thought ‘House of the Dragon’ was interesting because it was a prequel. Working on a prequel is like starting a new project, because it’s not directly related to the original.” Initially unfamiliar with the original series, Temaime was still able to successfully incorporate concepts such as color theory to create one-of-a-kind costumes for “House of the Dragon.”

The producers put meaning behind the costumes, giving special importance to the colors. Each color represents the color of each side of the family as well as their political affiliation; Red, black and gold symbolize blood, death, sex and fire, for example. “Having a strong color story influenced the silhouettes of the garments – simple and graphic shapes helped accentuate the colors and [forced us] To consider how these colors will appear on screen,” shares Temim. One standout dress is young Princess Rainera’s coronation gown, which symbolizes her pride in her family, as these were the colors her father wore during his big tournament.
