Halle Bailey is firmly stepping into her Ariel era for the 2022 Power of Young Hollywood issue variety. Bailey is not only known for her music – and snippets and covers on TikTok – but also for her blossoming film career. She is the first black lead actress in a Disney live-action remake, playing Ariel in “The Little Mermaid” in May 2023. And the “Ungodly Hour” singer transformed into character for her latest photo shoot, opting for an Ariel-inspired outfit.
She covered the issue wearing a green multimedia coordinating bra-and-skirt set by Joanna Prazmo that pays homage to the ocean with its algae-like structure. Embellished with orange abstract swirls to allude to coral reefs, the undersea aesthetic was taken a step further with PR Solo’s voluminous archival plexi heels. The cover look features a little dye in her hair, and inside the story, the movie’s director confirmed that Ariel’s hairstyle will indeed incorporate Bailey’s locs.
Bailey’s historic role has not come without its share of ignorant criticism, but she remains focused on breaking down barriers for black girls and inspiring future generations. “I want the little girl in me and little girls like me who see that they are special and should be princesses in every way,” Bailey said in the cover story. “There’s no reason why they shouldn’t be.”
In the issue, she recounts her experience filming “The Little Mermaid” overseas, teases new music and opens up about her other upcoming project, “The Color Purple.”
Haley Brooklyn Peltz joins Beckham, Becky G, and Angus Cloud as cover stars for the 2022 Power of Young Hollywood issue. Watch the full interview and scroll through to catch Bailey’s stunning cover.
