Few shoe brands have a more significant place in my life than Dr. Martens. When I was a kid, its combat boots were one of the first styles I fell in love with during my angsty preteen phase (though the boot was out of my budget at the time). As I got older and started traveling, the Chelsea Zip Boot became my go-to snow shoe. And yet, Dr. Martens loafers have become my favorite fashion loafers to mirror those famous, celebrity-wearing Prada loafers.
Documents have long been one of the most essential styles in my closet, proving to be trendy and chic in any season of my life. And while the brand may have a reputation for its favorite winter-boot selection, Dr. Martens (perhaps unknown to many) also offers transitional shoes that are great for every season — Dr. Martens with Blair Platform Sandals ($100) is emerging as my must-have shoe this summer (and probably my go-to for fall, too!).
The Blair Platform Sandal is the open-toed, summer-friendly addition to Dr. Martens’ already extensive collection of winter-friendly footwear, with the same level of comfort, style and bulk to elevate even the simplest of outfits with a statement-making touch: I’m basically this I’ve been living in chunky sandals all season, and I have a feeling they’ll double as the perfect transitional shoe come fall.
Read on for my honest review of the Dr. Martens Blair Platform Sandals.
What I love about these Dr. Martens chunky sandals
First and foremost: these sandals are the perfect transitional shoe. The temperatures are getting increasingly warmer these days – which means that it’s usually much later in the fall season before I feel comfortable pulling on my warm, heavy-duty boots (especially living in Arizona). Luckily, these sandals have thick leather straps that manage to provide decent coverage across my feet while still giving me an easy-to-wear, breathable look that can be styled with even the most layered fall outfits.
As someone who often shies away from experimenting with different fashion trends, I also appreciate the timeless look of these shoes. The sandal isn’t trying to play into a certain trend with ’90s patent material or bulky, Y2K-inspired hardware — it’s designed for the long haul, so I can trust it’ll feel chic and fresh long after the chunky-sandal trend fades. . I also tried to get into the chunky-sandal fad with different styles, but I was mostly disappointed with how clunky and weighty the shoe felt while on. These Dr. Martens are the first chunky sandals I’ve bought where I didn’t feel like I had to sacrifice comfort for style — thanks, in part, to the shoe’s contoured soft footbed, which helps provide extra arch support.
All in all, how little I actually like these sandals. . . Well, for an open-toe shoe, it’s surprising how secure the style is, even for all-day wear. With the leather upper composition and adjustable ankle strap, I was able to easily find the fit that was best for me and hand. From traveling and navigating the airport to embarking on some outdoor summer adventures, these chunky sandals have proven to be durable, offering sneaker-like comfort through and through.
What is worth noting
Not only from personal experience, but also from the general consensus of reviewers on the Dr. Martens site: these sandals run big. While the width is true to size, the retailer still recommends that shoppers order a full size down — especially if they prefer a comfortable, more formfitting look. I’m usually a size 10 but, per the review, ordered a size nine, and the fit turned out to be absolutely perfect.
While the word “platform” is quite literally in the sandal’s name, it’s also worth noting that these shoes are a pretty decent height — a 2.5-inch platform, to be more specific. I personally love the extra height provided by the sandals and find it helps add some extra bounce to my step. However, if you’re not into the sophisticated look or struggle with platform shoes in general, this is definitely something to be aware of before ordering the style.
Who are these Dr. Martens chunky sandals best for?
As someone who basically shops for a living, I can confirm that these really are the perfect transitional shoes – especially great for summer-to-fall outfits. Sandals are ideal for those looking for an investment shoe that they can easily wear all year round. And while I bought this style specifically for summer wear, I have every intention of wearing it through the fall, and despite the 100-degree summer temperatures I’ve admittedly already started experimenting with my fall outfit pairs.
Whether you’re pairing chunky shoes with a vibrant sundress for a fresh, summery style or suiting up a plaid-wrapped fall with a more breathable base, these Dr. Martens can go everywhere and pair with just about anything. Sandals have now become a permanent staple in my closet, wearable in any season!
