In a departure from the traditional fashion week calendar, Christian Siriano staged his Spring 2023 show at Elizabeth Taylor’s former townhouse in New York City on Wednesday, September 7. With a star-studded crowd seated in the front row — including Janet Jackson and longtime friend Coca Rocha — the catwalk began with a classic black, single-breasted suit complete with a huge taffeta sash at the shoulders. What followed could be described as a series of high-octane ensembles, most of which are fit for a white-tie party.
Based on her Fall 2022 collection, Siriano continued to explore post-pandemic eveningwear, expanding the glamor her clients longed for. The “Project Runway” host remained committed to themes of opulence and drama, presenting looks inspired by stylish women of the past, including Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Katharine Hepburn, Bianca Jagger, Judy Garland, Ava Gardner and, of course, Taylor.
“I love the idea of bringing beauty back into our lives with a collection of feminine evening gowns in boldly tailored suits, dress-like elements and attractive shapes and silhouettes,” Siriano said in an official statement.
Sartorial elements from recent Schiaparelli, Iris van Harpen and Valentino catwalks were given a Siriano twist, most visibly on a black blazer with wide white lapels, buttons and hems that recalled Daniel Rosebery’s signature tailoring; A trio of draped dresses boasting thread-like finishes inspired by Harpen’s fall 2022 couture collection; and a mock-neck ruffle minidress in Valentino PP Pink.
Elsewhere, a parade of ballgowns – many of which included Victorian details such as mutton sleeves, voluminous ruffles and a dropped waist – played on nostalgia. Meanwhile, whimsical tulle dresses have taken things to dramatic heights.
Ahead, see what Jackson and Rocha wore on the front row and some key looks from the collection.
