“Stranger Things” season four will premiere on Netflix in two volumes, and costume designer Amy Paris has provided us with all the costume details for these new episodes. Since the aesthetic transition from the fictional city of Hawkins, IN, to California took place, it was important to distinguish between settings by color palette, Paris explained to POPSUGAR.
Characters XI (Millie Bobby Brown), Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Dusty (Getten Matarazzo), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), Will (Noah Snap), Max (Sadie Sync), Nancy (Natalia Dyer), Jonathan (Charlie Hitton), And Robin (Maya Hawke) met newcomers Argil (Eduardo Franco), Jason Carver (Mason Dye) and Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn) in the 80’s, so there are plenty of bold fashion choices. Jason and Lucas embrace jock culture in varsity jackets and neat polo; Meanwhile, Mike, Jonathan and Argyle are leaning towards skater style, pulling from Paris Classic California surf brands such as Bones Brigade, Santa Cruz, Gecko Hawaii, Maui & Sons, Hobby, Hang Ten and Van.
The Paris team spends a large portion of the “Stranger Things” wardrobe. Some of their vintage stores include Miou in Long Beach, CA; Stash of York in Los Angeles; Recursive vintage in Delaware; And St. Denis in New York. Since the series was filmed in Atlanta, Paris maintains relationships with local vintage vendors who ship clothing directly to the set. “We take a look and keep what we like or need and return what we don’t expect to use,” he says. “It saves us a lot of time when we can’t leave Atlanta to shop from Philadelphia, Florida or any other hot spot where we get some of our vintage.”
The popular Netflix series has inspired 80s themed collections, ranging from cosmetic lines with MAC and Merci Handy to clothing like champion sweats and Jansport bags. Paris shared that some of the inspiration for her designs came from real icons of the decade, such as James Hetfield of Metallica and Patty Green, the character of Sarah Jessica Parker from “Square Pegs”.
