Balenciaga’s Fall 2022 collection made headlines in more ways than one. Take, for example, the Balenciaga caution-tape catsuit. Kim Kardashian sat front row at the show in a look she could barely walk in. Later, he had to ditch the catsuit entirely. Lizzo then attempted to dance on the set of a cover shoot in the UK when she arrived in the same outfit but could only do so with the robot due to movement limitations. Now, the Balenciaga trash-bag pouch has confused people just as much.
In March, Kardashian posted a gift from creative director Demna Gvasalia on her Instagram Stories: a black pouch that looked like a garbage bag, which Kardashian called “a trash-bag bag.” Now the design is officially available for purchase — with a price tag similar to the “fat” brand that popularized the original plastic trash bag. . . You know, the ones used for garbage disposals.
After that fall in March 2022, Gvasalia told WWD: “I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to make the world’s most expensive trash bag, because who doesn’t love a fashion scandal?”
While the bag isn’t currently available to shop online, High Snobby shared a photo from the store on Instagram, writing, “This Balenciaga trash bag costs $1790.” The publication also revealed that the expensive “trash-bag bag” comes in three colors: black with black tie, blue with black tie, and white with red tie, each made of calfskin. “Balenciaga is a meme designer,” wrote one commenter. “I got 40 of them under my sink,” commented another.
A controversial design is not entirely out of the ordinary for a design house under Gvasalia’s reign. After all, it not only produced the aforementioned caution-tape-covered catsuits but also completely distressed high-top sneakers, branded leather shopping bags, platform croc-style shoes and more.
The “Trash Pouch” from Balenciaga is clearly another attempt by the brand to create a viral moment. And as head-scratching as it may be, it’s definitely working.
