For the first time I can remember, I’m actually feeling ahead of the curve with Christmas shopping this year. I still have a few people left on my list – it seems like every year it’s hard to shop for the same few who haha. Many of you have said that the hardest people to shop for are parents / in-laws so I wanted to come up with some of my favorite gift ideas for parents. I think with parents, they usually accumulate enough ‘content’ over the years so I want to focus less on the realities and more on the experiences or services that will make their lives a little easier. I feel that the excitement of experience usually loses some of the opening excitement so I prefer the idea of more experience or service-centric gifts, also they usually create more unique gift ideas than you thought before.
Peace of mind with a home security system
SimpliSafe: My parents are building a house just across the street from us so they can spend time between Montana and Utah. I wanted to get a security arrangement for their new home so that they could have peace of mind while away. After a little digging, I land at SimpliSafe – it gets amazing reviews, and there are options to protect against water damage, freezing and more. Very easy to install (which is a must because the last thing I wanted to do was give my dad another job while he was already busy). It’s a super clean look so it blends in with the decor. Also, it’s easy to use – you can control everything from your phone. (While I was researching, SimpleSafe reviews won me over and I actually got a system for me and Cody because I’ve been very upset with our current alarm system lately 😂). They are off sale and open throughout December – The Haven (the package I ordered) is now on sale for a 40% discount. (And no deal, ever! Which is super beautiful).
Gift of rest:
Take the luxury to the next level and arrange a home massage for your parents. There is nothing more comfortable than getting out of a massage bed after a long day and rolling out in your own bed. Cody and I have used Jill before – you can choose what kind of massage, what kind of pressure, etc. to make sure you get the message you want. One year I actually got Cody a massage table for Christmas so we could massage in our own home so it could serve as a great gift idea for your S / O as well.
The gift of time
Walmart + / Grocery Subscription: One of my most used services (I literally use it more than once a week) is my grocery delivery subscription. I use Walmart + and Target Same Day Delivery and based on how often I use it they are probably the best investment of the year. It saves a lot of time to walk back and forth from the store, especially when I realize I forgot an element, and it has always become a convenient thing to move. Choose this idea for parents – you know another thing that will make their life a little easier which in the end does not accumulate dust on the shelf.
A clean house gift
Feeling we have ‘Run out of gas’ emotionally, I can’t wait to see what happens next. I think whenever I try to do it myself, when I finish cleaning a house, the end is already a mess haha. Give your parents an extra special treat and splurge on a cleaning service or gift card so they can schedule a deeper cleansing – maybe after your kids are at their home for the holidays, before they host a get-together, or just to visit After the busy holiday season. If you don’t think a professional cleaning service is their cup of tea, this UV sanitizing wand is a great way to give them the same clean feeling they could use for next year.
THIE gift to create new memories
Vrbo Trip Together: There have been many years where, instead of real gifts, my parents have taken our whole family on a trip. It always ended up being one of my favorite gifts, so we ended up doing the same thing over the years. These trips together were some of my favorite family memories and it is a gift that you will remember for years to come. Nothing creates new memories together. We prefer Vrbo for family trips, especially to be able to have Game Night or Movie Night in the same place without splitting into separate hotel rooms. For something they can open, a Vrbo gift card is a great idea.
A pre-planned date night gift
Plan an epic date night for your parents that they will remember year after year. This could be a ticket to a great event in their area, a gift card to a new restaurant of their choice, or you can go to Tripadvisor to get some ideas for creative activity in your area out of the box. Cody and I like to do new things together but sometimes we all need a little pressure to make it happen. As much planning as a date night doesn’t require, you can get a cute date night in a box – something like this seasonal or crime podcast for lovers of this cool-case mystery box.
If you have any other gift ideas for parents that don’t add up randomly, leave them below in the comments for other ideas for people.
