The Risks of "Socialization"

Why Does Prom Even Matter?

Sure, some people make excuses: "It's the defining moment of high school" or "Everyone does it at least once." In Victorian times this might have been the attitude, but not anymore. Prom attendance can nurture a score of other problems, such as external manipulation, social relationships, and death. These effects are not to be taken lightly, so neither should prom.

At this age in life, teens are still developing their own unique attitudes towards life. They are frequently confused and withdrawn. Prom forces unwanted social interaction, leading to new stimuli and emotional scarring. The pressure to conform to the expectations of others crushes the individual flower from blooming, and completely derails a successful mind. Intellectual output diminishes as the mind allocates time to think about topics such as dating and other people's feelings.

Scientific Facts About Prom

  • A 1999 study by the National Institute on Societal Abuse and Prom says that an 18-year old who attends prom has a 96% greater chance of watching network television later in life.
  • The average age of prom attendees continues to drop. One in five high school sophomores now attends prom.
  • The socialization of prom causes fundamental changes in the brain structure similar to those caused by drugs and violent behavior.
