Prom Information

The dictionary defines prom as simply, "a formal dance given by a high school class." It has been a tradition for over a century as a dangerous social stimulus that threatens to derail the minds of youths. Prom, the vernacular form of Promenade, typically consists of a large dance where girls and boys attend in pairs on "dates." After the main dance, there can (though not always) be a variety of events such as drinking, partying, or sexual activity.

The basic ingredient in prom is the social interaction. Relationships and socialization combine to form a variety of hazardous effects including extroversion, impaired judgement, euphoria, increased heart rate, and risk of widespread physical injury.

Effects of Prom on the Brain.
The effects of prom vary from individual to individual, but always include behavioral modification. Sensory information floods the amygdala, leading to confusion and the condition known as "groupthink," in which the brain is more susceptible to peer influences. The individual reaches out, requiring a greater link with society. From the first moment of the date, there may be emotional responses to the other person. This response causes lapses in rational judgement, leading to additional destructive behavior. A significant number of victims enter mainstream society and engage in such sinful actions as drinking and having sexual relations.

Effects of Prom on the Body.
Sweaty palms and panic attacks may occur either before or after. On the dance floor, ambient conditions cause dilation of the pupils. Emotional infatuation with members of the opposite sex can lead to an accelerated heart rate and sweaty palms. Many students experience nausea and/or headache due to the severe stress placed upon the body. Those that have experimented with prom before tend to have a lower severity of symptoms, as the body has learned to expect such social stimulation.

Social Effects of Prom.
Research on prom attendees has shown a marked increase in interpersonal relationships and social dependency, even with only one attendance. Friendships are created and strengthened, emotional bonds forged, and individuality stifled. A small percentage of attendees will eventually be traumatized sufficiently to engage in violent crime.
